I use Americolor food coloring from Amazon and it took 4 drops to get it a true red. It makes a HUGE difference to use good quality food coloring, and it's cheap too! I got a box of 12 for like $15 ish for Christmas. It's listed under Aetco and Americolor but they're the same thing.
(I've used Wilton for years, and I kept reading bakers who would mention this brand as the best brand, so I gave it a try. It really is way better.)
